This program brings students to two West African nations to acquire a greater understanding of African history and culture and the key role of Africans in the development of world civilizations. Students will be able to study and experience the richness and diversity of Benin and Ghana while expanding their intercultural, communication, critical thinking, and research skills.

Students will participate in guided tours and field trips, as well as interact with local government officials, educators, students, and other citizens of Ghana and Benin. As part of the service learning component, they will teach English literacy to children at elementary schools and orphanages in Ghana and middle school students at Les Vaillants School in the Republic of Benin. Students will participate with local university students in both Ghana and Benin and assist in several other cultural and socio-educational activities.

Wheelock College and Colleges of the Fenway students interested in participating in this program must:

  • Submit an application and be admitted
  • Register in Spring 2010 for AST 290: African History, Culture, and Spirituality (4 credits)
  • Attend all preliminary sessions

Applications are due October 30, 2009.
