This program allows students to gain a deep understanding of Puerto Rico's history and culture while working in schools and organizations in the capital city of San Juan. Through readings, discussions, and direct experiences students will learn about the factors that shape the experiences of Puerto Rican children and families living both on the island and on the mainland. An ecological systems perspective frames the course; the interdisciplinary nature of the program draws upon the fields of education, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and social work.
The trip also includes visits to local historical and cultural sites such as Old San Juan historic neighborhood, El Morro Fort, and El Yunque Rain Forest.
Undergraduates in this program will earn four credits while graduate students earn three.
Wheelock College and Colleges of the Fenway students interested in participating in this program must:
- Submit an application and be admitted
- Register in Spring 2010 for PRO 260/850 Puerto Rico Cross-Cultural Inquiry
- Attend all preliminary sessions
