Saturday, May 30th
Saturday the sun was shining and the CCSR was packed. With more than 280 alumni and guests on campus to celebrate! It was a sensational record turn out! The faculty sessions in the morning were well attended. Richard Williams, Director of First Year Experience, led an engaging book discussion of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Petra Hesse, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Human Development, presented a session entitled “Cyber Bullying: Incidence, Causes and Prevention.” Alumni agreed that it was great to be back in a Wheelock classroom!
A time honored tradition at Wheelock is our annual alumni procession! Our classes were showing their gold and white Wheelock pride in their respective processional items. Boy did they shine!
Leading the procession was the class of 2004, the 5th Reunion. Alumni strolled up the Riverway and into the Lucy Wheelock Auditorium. As Beverly Tarr Mattatall ’72, Alumni Board, Classes and Clubs Coordinator, enthusiastically introduced each class, classes stood to honor our Golden Graduates, the 50th Reunion, and the classes of 1954-1934! Perhaps the most touching moment was when bagpiper, Hamish Blackman, led President Jackie Jenkins-Scott and our most senior alumnae, Ruth Hallowell and Jean Osmond into the auditorium.
Ruth and Jean, who were greeted with a standing ovation from the rest of the classes, are members of the Class of 1934, celebrating their 75th Reunion! Congratulations, Ruth and Jean! Sandra Christison ‘92MS, President of the Alumni Association greeted alumni and introduced President Jackie Jenkins-Scott. Alumni were happy to hear an update about Wheelock today and learn about new initiatives and programs at the College. Jackie’s State of the College Address was followed by the Annual Awards Presentation. Congratulations to all our Reunion 2009 Award winners. Your work truly exemplifies the mission of Wheelock College. After the prestigious awards presentation, alumni and guests were entertained with a Reunion slide show.
The Annual Alumni Luncheon was followed by the class meetings. This was an opportunity for classes to share stories, reminisce, and remember classmates who have past away. Thank you to the class members who agreed to serve as Reunion Coordinators in 2014! Afternoon activities included a duck tour and an alumni trip to the MFA for a special tour led by Alumnae Maddi Cormier ’66 and Cynthia Hallowell ‘58. What fun it was to see the Ducks arrive and pick up alumni on the Riverway! Saturday night brought the special class dinners. Both on and off campus, these were intimate gatherings for each individual class. You could probably hear the laughter, and the tears of joy, from the top of the hub!
