Instruction Options
Course-Integrated Instruction
Integrating the use of the library and library resources into course objectives provides the opportunity for students to become more reflective researchers and critical thinkers. Classroom faculty and librarians develop the research component, design learning activities and assignments, and meet with the class and/or individuals throughout the semester.
Course-Related Instruction
Classes tailored to specific course content and assignments are available to all academic departments. These sessions can be of any duration and can range from a 15-minute orientation to a particular resource, collection, or service, to an extended instruction session addressing several topics and skills.
Web Site Evaluation
Almost all students use the web as their first and sometimes only source of information, but few have had any instruction in discerning what web sites are relevant and reliable sources of information for academic assignments. This class session highlights useful evaluation principles, tools, and techniques.
Internet and Database Instruction
Instruction focuses on the difference between searching the free web and searching subscription databases, and introduces subject-specific databases.
Approaching Library Research: Becoming a Strategic Practitioner
Topics can include those such as recognizing academic sources, exploring and selecting a topic, planning research, evaluating sources, decoding and creating citations, copyright, intellectual property and avoiding plagiarism, and library anxiety.
Concept Mapping for Organizing Research and Writing
Many students find Inspiration® software helps them clarify ideas, develop concepts, map research strategies, and organize writing. Instructors can create graphic organizers for their students, and use student-created diagrams for assessment. This session introduces use of Inspiration® software as a thinking tool.
Library Work Sessions
Schedule a time for you and your class to come work on an assignment with librarian support.
