Descriptions of Each Organization
ALANA
The main purpose of ALANA is to provide support to African, Latino, Asian, and Native American students on campus as well as acting as a channel between students to enrich their cultural understanding. ALANA has put on events such as Cultural Fest and puts on an annual Liquidation Sale.
Autism Awareness Club
The Autism Awareness Club is designed to open the eyes of the Wheelock community to the increasing diagnosis of children with autism, to educate future professionals about autism and the range of people that it affects, and to provide a group to share experiences and knowledge with about autism.
Best Buddies
The Wheelock College Best Buddies Chapter provides the opportunity for college students (College Buddies) and adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities (Buddies) to become friends. Friendship is the crucial element in Best Buddies, and activities are designed to build mutually enriching friendships between buddy pairs. Some of Best Buddies events include dances and bingo nights.
Boston Association for the Education of Young Children (BAEYC)
The Boston Association for the Education of Young Children, better known as BAEYC, follows the national club's objective of promoting excellence in the field of early childhood education. This club also strives to bring awareness of early childhood issues to campus. The members
participate in national conferences, most recently attending one in Washington D.C.
Campus Activities Board (CAB)
CAB or the Campus Activities Board organizes activities for the Wheelock Community both on and off campus in hopes of building relationships between students. CAB also hopes to encourage students to become an active member of the Wheelock community. This group works closely with the Colleges of the Fenway to provide entertainment for the surrounding college communities.
Campus Association of Social Workers (CASW)
The Campus Association of Social Workers is a student organization that provides information, support and programs of interest to Social Work majors and the College community as a whole.
Child Life Organization
The Wheelock Child Life Organization strives to combine the efforts of all Child Life concentrators, both undergraduate and graduate. The organization will provide a network support system for all students. The Child Life Organization will work to offer events that help educate child life concentrators and raise campus awareness of the Child Life profession and its role in pediatric medicine. The Child Life Organization reaches out to area hospitals and provides volunteer services and materials through working with area Child Life specialists.
Class Councils
Class Councils are designed to encourage school and class spirit among the entire group. These students have been elected to design, create and facilitate class events and fundraisers that support the feeling of unity.
Dance and Step Team (X-Clusive)
The Wheelock College Dance and Step Team provides an opportunity for Wheelock students interested in hip hop dancing and stepping to participate in programs not otherwise offered by Wheelock College. They explore other forms of dancing through workshops. As a group, they perform at sports rallies, talent shows, etc.
Gay-Straight Alliance
The Wheelock College Gay Straight Alliance is a support system and an information outlet for gay, lesbian, and bisexual students and their friends and supporters. The group is open to anyone on campus.
House Councils
House Councils are designed to encourage spirit among the entire group of residents. These students have been elected to design, create and facilitate events within the dorm and fundraisers that support the feeling of unity.
Pi Gamma Mu
The Wheelock College Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu promotes and supports academic excellence, especially in the area of the social sciences. The organization promotes participation in community service both within the organizations and campus-wide. Pi Gamma Mu recognizes academic achievement. Juniors and seniors who have cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or higher and have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or higher in the Social Sciences, are eligible to apply to Pi Gamma Mu.
Scrapbooking Club
The Scrapbooking Club provides students with an outlet to express their creative skills and create lasting keepsakes. This club meets regularly, provides technique workshops for members and showcases their designs to the Wheelock community.
Sign Choir
The Wheelock College Sign Choir is a performing-arts organization that brings deaf awareness to the Wheelock community as a culture and not a disability. Every semester the Sign Choir performs a series of songs for the community that they sing using sign language. The Choir promotes awareness of deaf culture and sign language as a form of communication through performances that integrate sign language with music and the performing arts.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
The Students Against Destructive Decisions organization provides students with prevention and intervention tools to combat the issues of but not limited to: underage drinking, drug use, and impaired decision making.
Women's Center
The Wheelock College Women's Center provides women with the resources and support they need to feel comfortable and discuss the topics of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and discrimination. They provide resources pertaining to safe sex and other women's issues. The organization strives to challenge attitudes and stereotypes of women, actions that subjugate women and to bring self awareness to women in the community.
Yearbook Club
The Yearbook Club works throughout the year to collect pictures of the Wheelock community and to design a yearbook for the graduating class.
