Our Uncompromising Commitment to Education
WFT is the only theatre in New England with an education program sustained by a professional theatre and an institution of higher education, Wheelock College, whose mission is focused on child development, early childhood education, and improving the lives of children and families.
Through WFT's education program, established in 1983, we have offered classes to thousands of young people, hundreds of whom have also had the opportunity to develop their creativity in WFT productions and to be mentored by professional actors and directors. The primary focus of our education program is supporting a child's intellectual, emotional, creative, and social development through drama activities. Several of our students have enjoyed careers in theatre and film (such as Academy Award-winner Matt Damon, "Twilight" actress Julia Jones). However, we believe true success is not measured by fame, but through instilling in our students lifelong values of creativity, compassion, and respect for others.
WFT Education Programs throughout the year:Fall, winter and spring courses: Our offerings include creative dramatics, acting, expressive movement, dance, and Shakespeare and serve nearly 200 young people per season.
Summer Program: four weeks of acting classes for young people with workshops in movement, voice training, and theatre crafts; and Story Troupers, a teenage touring ensemble.
Vacation Week Institutes: offering intensive theater experiences for young people.
Student Matinee Series: brings a diverse student population from greater Boston and beyond to WFT productions each season.
Special Features and Initiatives: PAH! Deaf Youth Theatre, an after-school theatre training program for deaf teenagers established in the fall of 1994. Collaborative partnerships underway with local schools and community groups.
Partnerships: Wheelock Family Theatre partners with schools and community organizations through performance attendance, drama workshops for students, and professional development workshops that train teachers to integrate drama into the classroom.
