On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, Wheelock hosted its second Passion for Action Leadership Award Dinner at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

Bill Lowell accepted the 2009 Passion for Action Leadership Award on behalf of the Lowell Family. Wheelock chose the Lowell family because their history of commitment to educational access embodies Wheelock's current vision.

The Passion for Action Leadership Award Dinner aims to raise the profile of Wheelock in the Boston community while celebrating the spirit of the College through our students and those who support our mission. Wheelock is continuing to build on the great success of the 2007 event, where the College honored Chris Gabrieli and five high school student leaders for their contributions to their communities. With the funds raised through the 2007 event, the College created the Passion for Action Scholarship Program for outstanding first-year Wheelock students from Greater Boston. These four-year scholarships are given to students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and involvement. The scholarship is paired with a unique academic program that will develop these students' leadership and community service skills. In September 2008, the first five Passion Scholars joined the Wheelock College Class of 2012. Wheelock will continue to award five scholarships each year. The proceeds from the 2009 Passion for Action Leadership Award Dinner will support the growth of this special scholarship program.
