Students & Alumni -- Services, Resources, and Programs
The Center for Career and Professional Development provides numerous career initiatives to assist students and alumni at all stages of their career development process, including access to employment opportunities, graduate school, and professional development. Students who begin using the services provided by the Center for Career and Professional Development early in their educational experience have a better understanding of how to present themselves professionally in academically related field experiences and beyond, as well as how to use a variety of strategies in the job search process. The Center also provides services and resources to support educational endeavors. Alumni are encouraged to access resources and to participate in programs after graduation. CAREER COUNSELING
The staff of the Center is available to meet with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni, on an individual basis to assist with assessing skills, experiences, and career goals and to provide concrete suggestions for job search strategies. Individual counseling sessions may address questions pertaining to career options based upon a major that is selected, graduate school programs and the application process, or questions regarding a career change. In addition, individual appointments present opportunities for students to receive feedback on their resumes and to learn valuable interviewing strategies. GRADUATE SCHOOL ADVISING
The career staff is available to meet with students and alumni to provide assistance and guidance with the graduate school search process. Information about the admissions and financial aid processes and Internet resources for standardized examinations and scholarships is available on the career web site. In addition, the Center for Career and Professional Development maintains the following resources:
- Registration materials for the GRE (Graduate Record Exam), MAT (Miller Analogy Test), and the PRAXIS.
- Peterson's Graduate Programs in Education, Social Work, Business, Health, Information Studies, Law, the Humanities, Arts & Social Science, Biological Sciences, and in the Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Agricultural Sciences, the Environment & Natural Resources, along with the Peterson's Graduate Professional Programs Overview.
- Graduate School Guide: A publication of graduate program profiles sorted by state and discipline.
RESUME/COVER LETTER REVIEW
A member of the career staff will review and discuss suggestions for improvement for resumes and cover letters during an individual appointment. A follow up appointment can be made to critique an updated document.
Recognizing that Wheelock alumni are located around the country, alumni may utilize this service via e-mail without a first in person appointment.
The career staff makes every effort to respond with suggestions to each e-mail request within three business days.ONLINE RESOURCES
Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni, can take advantage of the Center for Career and Professional Development's online job listings through Wheelock Works. Employers from a variety of disciplines post openings for part-time, full-time, temporary and permanent employment, in addition to internship and volunteer opportunities. Wheelock Works can be accessed by current students and alumni at: www.wheelock.edu/ccd/ Once a participant's profile is completed, the information must be activated by a member of the Center. The career staff makes every effort to activate individual student or alumni profiles within three business days.

MOCK INTERVIEWS
To prepare to interact successfully with employers, students and alumni are encouraged to participate in a mock interview, a simulated interview with a member of the career staff. Interview questions are used that can simulate actual inquiries from employers. Following the interview, the participant will receive feedback of verbal and non-verbal responses, including use of body language and the content of responses. STUDENT/ALUMNI RESOURCE
The Center for Career and Professional Development also provides a Student/Alumni Resource and Technology area in which career resources can be accessed, including online job listings through Wheelock Works, guides and directories for different disciplines, registration testing materials, internship listings, major specific career guides, and career development materials. The Resource Center is open during office hours.CAREER PROGRAMS
The Center for Career and Professional Development sponsors career development workshops throughout the academic year, and in many instances, in collaboration with departmental faculty. Programs are also presented to assist students with a job or graduate school search. A schedule of career events, including date, time, and location, will be posted on the Center‘s Calendar.
The Center also collaborates with employers in social/human services, non-profit organizations, and public and private schools to bring organizations on campus during the spring semester for Career Fairs. These events promote positive face to face interactions and connections between students, alumni, and employers. All students are actively encouraged to participate in these events for their career and professional development.
